Horses for Adoption: FAQs

Where do these horses come from?
Colorado Horse Rescue receives horses through Animal Control Agencies across the state of Colorado, as well as horses surrendered by their owners.

What condition are the horses in?
Horse’s arrive in various conditions, from severe starvation to fit and healthy.

How old are the horses?
Our horses can range in age from 6 months to 40 years old.

Do you have rideable horses?
Yes. We have a large variety of horses. At any given time, we may have sound trail horses, green horses, horses with behavior issues, horses that require special farrier or medical care, and non-rideable companion only horses.

How much does it cost to adopt a horse?
Our adoption fees vary with each horse. They generally range from $350.00-$2,500.00, depending on the horses age, health, temperament and training.

How much does it cost to care for a horse?
The adoption fee is the least expensive cost of owning a horse. It can cost between $3,000.00-$8,000.00 annually to care for a horse

What is included in the adoption?
-Vaccinations
-Deworming
-Copy of a Negative Coggins test
-Feed & medical history

How long does the adoption process take?
It can take as little as two weeks, or as long as a few months. This time frame will depend on your schedule, and if we have a suitable horse for you when your application comes in.

Can first time horse owners adopt?
Yes, but you will be required to take at least one general horsemanship class.

How old do I have to be to adopt?
Adopters must be 21 years of age.

Can horses be adopted out of state?
We will consider adoptions to neighboring states (Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, & New Mexico on a case by case basis.

Can I have a horse vet checked?
Absolutely. We encourage adopters to treat an adoption just as you would the purchase of a horse. A pre-purchase exam is always a good idea.

How do I start the adoption process?
The first step in the adoption process is to submit an adoption application and the $25.00 application fee. Once we receive your application, you will be contacted to schedule a visit to our farm.

Can I just stop by the CHR farm?
No. To give you the time and consideration you deserve, we ask that you contact our office to schedule an appointment.
