Horses for Adoption

Colorado Horse Rescue's adoption program places hundreds of horses into loving permanent homes. Adoption can be one of the most rewarding and wonderful experiences of your life. Many people believe that if a horse is available for adoption, nobody wants it and it has no value. This couldn't be further from the truth. Many of our horses are sound, rideable trail horses.

We also have horses that are rideable with limitations, and others that can no longer be ridden due to age or health concerns. These horses can have the much-needed "job" of Companion. Who are these horses? What makes them a companion horse? Most often they are sweet, trusting, and loving animals that have advanced in age or have worked hard throughout their life. Usually they are non-rideable and make excellent friends for other horses. As a Companion, these horses also have the opportunity to live the rest of their days with a caring and loving family.

Here at CHR, we believe that variety is the spice of life, and that every horse should be loved and valued.

At any given time, we have over forty horses available for adoption. These may include horses, ponies, miniature horses, and even an occasional donkey or mule. Breeds may include Quarter Horses, Arabians, Thoroughbreds, Tennessee Walking Horses, Paso Fino's, Mustangs, Paints, Morgans, and wonderful grade horses. Open your heart to a Colorado Horse Rescue horse, and adopt a partner for life!

Asa

Arabian 14 Gelding Non-Rideable / Companion
AsaI've come a long way since arriving at CHR a few years ago! You see, I came from a very abusive past and have been struggling to overcome my fear of humans for a long time now. There have been several nice people at CHR who have worked with me over the years and I'm proud to list my accomplishments. I can be haltered and I'll walk nicely with you, I like to be brushed, I pick up all four of my feet for cleaning, and can even be fly sprayed! Due to some conformation problems I have, I'll never be rideable but I'd make a nice companion for a very calm, quiet, and patient horse person who can work with me on a regular basis. I'll probably always confidence issues so I need a very special human who understands that gentle reassurance goes a long way with me! Sponsor Me!

Atta

Thoroughbred 21 Mare Rideable / Advanced Intermediate
AttaI haven't been at CHR very long but I've managed to integrate nicely into the herd. I have a good disposition and nice temperament under saddle. I can be ridden at all gates but I should let you know that I have lots of energy and like to move. I need an experienced rider who uses soft hands and quiet leg cues. I used to be ridden English and even did some jumping in my younger days before becoming a trail horse. So if you like versatile Thoroughbreds and like to go on easy rides, I might be the girl for you.

Bebe

Arabian 21 Gelding Rideable (with training)
BebeI'm the cute little Arab who roams around the pasture with my ears pinned back all the time. I'm not sure why I do this since they are back even when I'm not mad! I'm still learning how to socialize with horses and people, which has been sort of a challenge for me. Due to an unfortunate family situation, I was kept by myself as a stallion in a round pen for 17 years and never handled. I could only watch the other horses around me and never got to play with any of them.  I can have sort of a "bad attitude" sometimes so attending groundwork sessions each week really helps me out with my manners. They say I am a very good student and learn things very quickly. I keep my ears up the whole time I'm in class and am very attentive to the direction I receive. I'm doing well at walking nicely on a lead, being groomed, having my feet picked and trimmed, and was saddled recently for the first time with no hysterics! (I got my tummy rubbed for that accomplishment). I am a sure-footed and sound horse who wants to continue to learn new things so I can be someone's special friend and riding partner someday. Big Grey

Thoroughbred 22 Gelding Rideable / Advanced Intermediate
Big GreyMy name says it all. I'm big and I'm gray and I was a race horse in my younger days. I was sort of left at a boarding facility for some reason but because I was so nice, several generous boarders took care of me before CHR took me in. I hadn't been ridden in quite a few years before my initial evaluation at CHR but I'm pleased to report that I did great!! I know lots of things and remember the riding routine like it was yesterday. I'm very sensitive to voice and leg commands and can really move out so I'll need a strong rider who can manage my energy. I'm probably too old to start jumping but I'd make a fun horse for flatwork in the arena and trail rides. I have very nice manners, love to be groomed, and am a perfect gentleman for the farrier. I enjoy pasture life and am good around other horses and people.

Bindi

Arab 9 Mare Under evaluation
BindiI’m a really cute bay Arab who came to CHR as a victim of neglect.  I’m doing well here now and getting enough to eat. I’m friendly but a little shy.  The people at CHR don’t know much about my past so they aren’t sure if I’ve ever been ridden.  I’m waiting my turn to be evaluated so I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Blossom

Arab DOB 4/30/07 Filly Will need trainer
BlossomADOPTED!
I'm the cute baby at the rescue--you may know of me since I've been featured on TV, in the newspaper, and on the internet. I was born at CHR in late April of 2007 to my mom, Summer. She came to the resuce pregnant and hungry. She ate all she could before I was born and luckily all is well with both of us now. I was born healthy and energetic and they say I might be a fancy registered Arabian but I don't really care about that stuff. I just want to show you what nice manners I have and how friendly and smart I am. I'm healthy and sound and have nice confirmation so I will be a nice riding horse someday.

Cassie

Arabian 24 Mare Non-Rideable / Companion
CassieThey say that I'm one of the sweetest and kindest horses at the rescue! My gentle nature and nice manners makes me a favorite at CHR. I'm a beautiful older gal who cannot be ridden anymore but would make a wonderful companion for another older and gentle horse or two. When the weather is bad, I like to come into the barn and I need a nice soft area to lie down and take naps. I love to be groomed and go on walks so if you think I might be just the horse you're looking for, please give me a home. Sponsor Me!

Cece

Thoroughbred 11 Mare Rideable / Advanced
CeceAren't I beautiful?! I'm one of the tallest and most athletic girls at CHR. I came to the rescue recovering from a wound on my back leg but I'm in good shape now and have started working again on being ridden. I am pretty green (that's what humans say when they mean inexperienced) and have to admit that I am a bit pushy and need a very confident handler to help me stay on my best behavior. But I'm energetic and catch on to things quickly and enjoy the attention of being ridden. I can NEVER be bred again due to a medical problem, which is a-okay with me. If you have a big heart & lots of experience, I would love to go home with you.

Chammy

Arabian 23 Gelding Rideable / Intermediate
ChammyI'm a mellow old guy with a good disposition who has spent the last several years living in a pasture. I'm an easy keeper and get along fine with other horses. I haven't been ridden in a long time but my former owner says that I'm pretty good under saddle. I'm a little girthy and can crow-hop when changing gates but that may be because I'm out of shape. So if you are a small rider and like Arabs, I might be just the guy for you.

Chico

QH 23 Gelding Non-Rideable / Companion
ChicoLooking at me now you would never know that just a couple of months ago I was emaciated & oh so hungry! I feel so lucky to be here. Now some folks might even call me a wee bit chubby. Nahhh… I'm just right! I have been a lesson horse, and taken good care of children in my day. Now, I am searching for a person with a big heart, to take care of me and allow me to be a buddy to your horse. I can no longer be ridden, but I just love attention, and get along great with all of the horses here. Come on… you know your horse needs a new friend! Sponsor Me!

CoCo

Paso Fino 13 Mare Rideable / Advanced Rider
CoCoNo No No...for the last time...I am not pregnant. I know I am pretty round in the middle, but I have a very valid excuse. You see I have what they call hypothyroidism. I take medication for it but I'm still overweight. I could use some groundwork exercise to help me get my stylish figure back before anyone rides me. I am a highly sensitive girl who enjoys the company of calm, quiet, confident horse savvy people. I am also pretty petite (14H with a slight build) so my new person should be on the small size. I am sound and healthy, and just hanging around here waiting for my perfect match. Might that be you?

Cowboy

QH 7 Gelding Non-Rideable / Companion
CowboyI recently became a television star on Channel 9's Petline 9 segment. I was a little nervous & camera shy, so I didn't want to hold still. I am really the most cute and cuddly Guy around this place. I'm not sure why, but I have always been tiny, in fact here they refer to me as CHR's miniature Quarter Horse. I guess I never fully developed or something. Other than being small, I am healthy but can never be ridden. I would love to be your new best friend! Sponsor Me!

Duke

Quarter Horse 24 Gelding Occasional Light Ride only
DukeI was really skinny when I came to CHR from not getting enough to eat but I’m fine now.   In fact, you could say that I’m an easy keeper!  I’m a gentle old soul most of the time—just wandering slowly around the pasture with my buddies.   I’m very polite around people and other horses.  I need to tell you that I’ll pull back if I’m tied up so that's something to watch with me .  I’m also a little spooky about some things but generally speaking, I’m a really nice guy.  I’m considered a light ride horse but because I’m kind of old and a little stiff from arthritis, I should only be taken for short, non-strenuous rides.  If you like big gentle Quarter Horses and can handle my minor spookiness issues, we may get along really well!

Feather

Arabian 34 Mare Non-Rideable / Companion
FeatherHalleluiah!!! I am finally retired. I have worked hard all of my life, and I am more than ready for some rest & relaxation. I am a beautiful white Arabian mare who loves to have my long flowing mane and tail brushed. I'm gentle, and love to be fussed over. I get along great with all of the horses here, so I would make a fabulous companion for your horse. What do you say...Any retirement homes available out there? Sponsor Me!

Fiesty

QH 26 Gelding Non-Rideable / Companion
FiestyIf you like a good looking Quarter Horse then I am definitely the boy for you. I am a striking red dunn gelding who just loves attention. Although I am a big handsome fella, I am not rideable due to a back injury I sustained as a youngster. I want nothing more than to hang out with the boys in my pasture and enjoy some human companionship during my retirement years. My name is a little deceiving because even though I can be just a tad pushy at times, I am really a lover not a fighter. Come on out and see for yourself! Sponsor Me!

Flicka

Arab 4 Mare Young—Unstarted—Must have trainer
FlickaADOPTED!
I was a hungry girl when I came to CHR but I’m doing great now.  I’ve never had any training but I’m young and smart so I don’t think it will take long for me to come around and show you what my potential is.  I’m super friendly and can be pushy sometimes but it’s just because I need someone to show me what good manners are all about.  I’ve worked a little in the round pen and am still trying to figure out what that’s all about but I’m willing to try whatever is asked of me.  If you are qualified to handle me and are looking for a horse with no health issues, we may be a perfect match.

Frankie

Arab/QH Cross 8 Gelding Non-Rideable / Companion
FrankieThe best way to describe me is the pasture goofball. I love to play & act silly. Sometimes my antics get me into trouble & I hurt myself. That's why I'm here actually. I cut one of my legs pretty badly a couple of years ago & so I can no longer be ridden. I  need special farrier care to keep my hoof from overgrowing. I am very loving and sweet and would make the best pasture pal ever. I get along with all the horses here, but love human companionship as well. Do you have room in your heart & pasture for a goofball like me? Sponsor Me!

Happy

QH 26 Gelding Non-Rideable / Companion
HappyMy name certainly reflects my personality. I am a happy go lucky kind of guy. I feel very lucky that I got to come to CHR. I was being starved to death by my previous owners after giving them years of safe riding. Can you believe how ungrateful some people are? Now I am ready for a fabulous retirement home. I get along well with all of the horses in my pasture, and have impeccable ground manners. I do require special shoeing to keep me comfortable because I have navicular, but otherwise I am a very easy keeper. Come on out and visit with me…. My happiness is contagious. Sponsor Me!

Hero

Quarterhorse 31 Gelding Companion
HeroDo you know I have been rescued twice from starvation? I've definitely been unlucky in the past, but everyone here has taught me that life can be really good. Justice

Quarterhorse 34 Gelding Advanced Beginner / Limited Ride
JusticeSome people think 30 is old, well they should just get a look at me. I was neglected before being rescued by my friends at CHR. Just look at me now, I'm fit as a fiddle. I like to play this game with the volunteers, Catch me if you can. I think it's kind of funny, but once you get me haltered I'm very laid back. I have a little arthritis in my knee, but I would love to take your kids or grandkids on short walks.

Killian

Thoroughbred 13 Gelding Companion
KillianI'm the beautiful red Thoroughbred from the geldings' pasture who gets by on my good looks! You see, I'm the grandson of the great Northern Dancer so I know I'm "special." I'm a good guy who is enjoying a life of leisure after years of showing. A recently diagnosed problem with one of my stifles has de-classified me from "rideable" to "companion" but that's OK with me. I'm good at just hanging out with my horse friends and I enjoy my time with people who like to groom me. I get a little anxious away from the pasture but they say, "that's a Thoroughbred thing!" I'm pretty passive in the pasture so I need a home where other geldings won't pick on me. If you need a friend for your nice horse, please keep me in mind! Sponsor Me!

Lily

Miniature Horse 32 Mare Non-Rideable / Companion
LilyExperienced horse people only need apply for me. I will not even try to snow you about myself. You see I have problem with food aggression, but I do understand the first step to recovery is admitting that I have a problem. I don't like to make excuses, but I think I am this way because at my previous home I was living with chickens and ducks and only being fed chicken scratch. I actually can't believe I'm still alive. I had to work very hard for food, and so now I am extremely possessive of it when I have it. It is going to take someone with a lot of experience and a huge heart to accept me for myself. I also require special feed because I don't have very much in the way of teeth anymore. It might take awhile, but I just know the right person is out there for me, and I promise to try really hard to be a good girl if you just give me a chance. Oh, one more thing: I am definitely not safe for children. Sponsor Me!

Little Bit

QH 5 Mare Under riding evaluation
Little BitI’m a cute but small Quarter Horse who just likes to hang out in the pasture.  I’ve got a mind of my own and I struggle with being nervous when I am taken out of my pasture.  I need a confident handler who can work through these issues with me.  I am doing a little groundwork in the round pen and won’t be evaluated as a riding horse until my ground manners improve.   I am looking for a trainer that practices Natural Horsemanship who would be available to volunteer time to come out and help me with some of my issues.  I’d love to find just the right home and a family of my own.

Logan

Arabian 16 Gelding Rideable / Intermediate
LoganBoy...what does it take to get a true Arabian lover to come out here and visit me. I have been here at CHR for quite a while now, and would really like to have my very own person to love & care for me. I guess some folks who considered me didn't always like my silly antics (spooking at a water bucket, or being girthy). Hey, nobody's perfect you know. I will admit that I need an experienced rider to give me confidence and leadership. With the right person I can really shine, but I am definitely not the right fit for everyone. If you love us spunky type Arabs & have the experience, I know we will be lifelong trail buddies. I am sound and healthy and registered with the Arabian Horse Association. Come on, give me a try, I might just surprise you.

Lola

Quarter Horse 7 Mare Rideable—Needs experienced handler
LolaI may have come to CHR as a skinny girl but I’m in good shape now!  I have a wonderful disposition and do just fine away from the pasture.  I’m good with my feet and medical procedures.   I am a sound and rideable mare but will need an experienced rider because I’m very green.  I’m very sensitive and respond best to calm and quiet handling.   I do well in my weekly round pen schooling sessions and am learning more and more each time.  I’m a pretty mover, very athletic, and have the potential to be wonderful riding companion for just the right person.

Moon

Arab 13 Gelding Rideable / Intermediate
MoonI’m a flashy little guy in the pasture who just “floats” when I move (they say it’s an Arab thing).  I’ve been under evaluation to be classified at an intermediate riding level and so far so good.  It seems that I know some things and have probably been trained sometime in my past. I'm a little spooky sometimes on the trail and I need some work on my ground manners but I'm a pretty sweet guy.  I’ll need a lightweight rider because of my small size.   I do best away from my pasture if I have a friend with me and I’m not very good with my feet for the farrier but I'm working on that.  I’m not perfect, I guess, but I am an agreeable guy who likes attention and loves to play with my pasture mates.  Oh…and did I say I’m really cute too?

Penny

Arabian X 9 Mare Rideable/Untrained/Advanced
PennyYou will recognize me in the pasture with my long flowing mane. The volunteers keep it nicely braided for me so I don't get tangles. I have not had much training, but I do know the basics: I lead, load, tie & am good for the farrier. I am blind in one eye due to an infection that was not treated at my previous home. This loss of sight has made me a bit spooky, but with a calm experienced person I really relax. I will need training if you would like to ride me, and a small person (I am a little girl 13H), but I know I can do it. I am requesting someone with training experience so we can ride off into the sunsets together someday.

Ransom

TB X 3 Gelding Untrained
RansomI will always be grateful to the folks here at CHR that rescued me from the livestock auction. Can you believe I was dumped off there at only 6 months of age? I'm guessing it was because I don't have the best conformation and my knees are rather big. Whether or not I will be rideable someday remains to be seen, so I need a home that will accept and love me forever either way. I have been working with my favorite volunteer Sara for a while now, and she thinks I have really improved. No more of that adolescent biting and kicking for me... I'm a man now! Who knows... if I continue taking my supplements, maybe I can take you for rides one day. If not, I would still love to be your buddy for life. Sponsor Me!

Red Ranger

Appendix 31 Gelding Advanced Beginner / Limited Ride
Red RangerI'm fairly new to the rescue but I've settled in just fine. I'm a bit of a loner but am making a few friends now. I used to be a pack horse so I'm used to the wilderness and nothing much spooks me. I prefer wide open spaces over the confinement of a stall--I don't like all that fancy barn stuff--just some decent outdoor shelter. I'm missing some of my teeth so I'll always need some extra attention given to my food routine but other than that, I'm in good shape for my age. I'd be suitable for light trail rides and would be a steady companion.

I cannot be ridden due to some lameness issues, but I am a big tall handsome fella that I bet your horse would love. I get very attached to my pasture mates & follow them around all day. Spade

Appendix 19 Gelding Rideable / Intermediate Rider
SpadeI'm one of the big guys at CHR and have a good disposition to match my size. I'm a very mellow and agreeable guy who is looking for a gentle rider who will respect my talents since I respond best to soft hands and light leg pressure. I can be ridden Western or English, on the trail or in an arena setting. I move nicely at all gaits and enjoy a variety of riding activities. (I'm probably a little too old for jumping, though). I do fine away from the herd and I'm really just an all around good guy. I'm a little out of shape from not being ridden in a few years but my initial exercise rides are going great. So keep me in mind if you're looking for a nice guy to ride and a good companion for another horse.

Star

Quarter Horse 7 Mare Rideable—Needs expert handler
StarIf you are a trainer level person who likes Quarter Horses and needs  a “project,” I may be just the horse for you!  I’m a big healthy gal who prefers to just hang with my friends in the pasture all day.  I get pretty nervous away from the herd and fuss a lot when I am asked to do things in the round pen.  My favorite vice is backing up and I’m really good at it especially when I’m faced with an activity that I don’t want to participate in.  During my initial riding evaluation, I got really nervous and reared up so now I need to go back to groundwork training.  I am also looking for a trainer who uses Natural Horsemanship methods who might be able to volunteer some time to come and work with me.

Sugar

Arab 27 Mare Non-Rideable / Companion
SugarI came to CHR as the poster girl for how NOT to take care of your horse! I only weighed 570 pounds and looked like a skeleton covered with hair. My feet were so long that I’d trip over them when I walked. After months of rehabilitation including special feedings and lots of farrier work, I’m at a good weight (850 pounds) and have joined the mares' pasture. I am a nice gal who likes attention but is just spunky enough to let you know if something is making me nervous. I shouldn’t be ridden because I have an arthritic knee that’s a bit crooked but other than that, I’m in good shape.  If you are looking for a companion for another older horse or two, I may be just what you are looking for. It seems that I have some neurological problems in my hind quarters that cause me some problems when people try to ride me. So I’m just a pasture pal now. Being a mustang, I’m very sensitive and it takes me some time to warm up to unfamiliar people and new situations. I need an intermediate handler who can be quiet and gentle around me. Zena

Thoroughbred 18 Mare Rideable / Advanced Intermediate
ZenaI’m a nice tall gal who came to CHR very thin and with badly overgrown hooves.  After getting back to a healthy weight and having lots of farrier work done, it’s time to see what I can do.  I’m currently being evaluated as a riding horse and all is going well. I'm good on the trail and in an arena setting. I'm a little unsure of things sometimes but get better each time I'm ridden. I've shown no interest in bucking or rearing which I hear is a good thing! I can be a little bit herdy and prefer to just hang out in the pasture but I think I’d improve greatly if I had a person in my life that I could trust and who wouldn’t hurt me.
