Volunteer Staff Positions

Please fill out a “VOLUNTEER APPLICATION” and forward it to our Volunteer Coordinator. After a review and approval of your application, we will notify you to set-up an interview and tour of our facility.

MORNING Barn Chore Team Member (8:00 AM until 11:30 AM):

A great way to start your day! Spend some time outside and help feed our 50 horses their breakfast. Then it’s on to watering the horses, general barn clean-up, and preparing feed buckets for the next shift. We often have special projects that we need help with so any time you can spare after the morning chores are complete is appreciated. When the weather is nice, we include some “horse time” for all volunteers that may include grooming and walking the horses. Horse experience preferred but we welcome all volunteers who are strong team players and have a desire to work hard in order to help the horses. Minimum 3 month commitment to one day per week. Training period required. Position not suitable for large or “one time only” groups.

EVENING Barn Chore Team Member (3:00 PM until 5:00 PM):

Spend the late afternoon with our horses. Help to feed our 50 horses their dinner and enjoy some time outside. It’s a great way to unwind after work or school! Help with general barn clean-up, watering, and preparing feed buckets for the next shift. Groom horses as weather permits and help with special projects as needed. Horse experience preferred but we welcome all volunteers who are strong team players and have a desire to work hard in order to help the horses. Minimum 3 month commitment to one day per week. Training period required. Position not suitable for large or “one time only” groups.

Barn Chore SHIFT LEADER (morning or evening shift):

Lead our barn chore teams through a morning or evening feeding. Coordinate, manage, and assist in the activities of all volunteers including horse handling, horse care, feeding, and general clean up. Must be detail oriented and efficient so as to ensure the continuity of all barn protocol. Intermediate level horse handling skills are required. Human resource management experience is helpful. Applicants for this position will be considered after two months of consistent weekly participation as a barn chore team member.

Office Assistant (schedule is flexible):

Assist our Office Manager and Executive Director with administrative tasks such as filing, archiving, special mailings, office cleaning, answering phones and emails, and light computer work. Writing and organizational skills are helpful. If you are detail oriented and can work within deadlines, please consider donating your time for this important work on behalf of our horses.

Special Events Team Member (year-round):

Assist our staff with preparing for any of the many special events we participate in each year, ranging from the National Western Stock Show, on-site horse clinics and our annual Holiday Open House. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help set-up and disassemble our CHR booths at large shows as well as work the booths during their general hours of operation. Good communication skills and knowledge of the organization are helpful in promoting our organization at all events. We sometimes take horses to events so horse handling skills are beneficial but not mandatory. There are many events to choose from and we can always use extra help. This is a fun way to get involved with the community and promote CHR.

Facility Maintenance Worker (year round but schedule is flexible):

Light and heavy vehicle maintenance. We utilize a number of vehicles here at the farm for all the many activities we work through each day. We are looking for mechanical people who can help maintain our “work horses” such as our pick-up trucks, tractor, skidsteer, golf carts and horse trailers.

Building, grounds, and fence upkeep. In our efforts to keep our facility looking sharp, we can utilize more volunteers to help with such things as fence repair, harrowing of our pastures, horse shelter and barn repair, rock removal, manure spreading and/or hauling, and building of additional horse pens and pastures. These projects can be completed by an individual or a group of volunteers who enjoy outdoor farm work. If your work group has the necessary skills to help with these sorts of projects, we could certainly use the help.

Gardening. With over 50 acres of open space we are in need of individuals or groups of volunteers who can help with maintenance of the garden spaces around our office and barn including weeding, planting flowers, watering trees, and mowing. If you have flowers or plants you would like to donate to help make our facility look better, we can always find spots for you to plant your favorite items! This is a great activity for large work groups that are looking for a day-long project.

“The Mane Event” Auction Committee Member (monthly meetings with work from home):

This is a great opportunity to work with a talented group of volunteers to help raise BIG funds for the horses. We are looking for outgoing, enthusiastic and creative individuals who will go out into the community to solicit donations for the auction as well as help put on the event itself. Previous fundraising experience is a plus but not mandatory. Members of the auction committee typically meet once per month with additional meetings closer to the event. The benefit auction is held the 3rd Saturday of August each year. Most of the volunteer hours for the auction are done on your own time. This is a fun way to get involved with the community and promote CHR.

Graphic Designer (schedule is flexible, work from your office):

CHR is seeking an experienced, professional graphic designer for help with a variety of projects. Volunteers must have their own computer and software to work from. Preferred software are any of the Adobe CS programs and QuarkXPress 6 or higher. Primary projects include but are not limited to: quarterly newsletter design and layout, brochure design and layout, sign design, and print ads. Experience preparing documents for professional, mass print is a must. Volunteers in this position will be able to work with a deadline, be detail oriented, and be available for last minute revisions. If you would like to help but are too busy to donate all of your time please contact us about discounted rates of service you can offer. References and portfolio required.
