At Colorado Horse Rescue (CHR) there are plenty of ways you can help the horses! Submit an application and become part of a generous, extensive network of invaluable volunteers.
How do I apply?
You can fill out an “ONLINE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION” OR You can download and print our Volunteer Application (PDF) to mail or fax to us.
After reviewing your application, we will contact you to schedule an interview. All barn volunteers who are accepted into our program must complete a practical orientation prior to their first scheduled shift.
What do volunteers do?
-
Barn Chores - Volunteers who take care of the horses help with chores from 8-11 am and 3-5:30 pm each day and must commit to at least one regular shift a week for a three month period. This team of over 70 volunteers do the very necessary tasks that keep our horses happy and healthy. This includes:
o Preparing feed buckets
o Cleaning and filling water troughs
o Mucking stalls and pens
o Keeping the barn clean and organized
-
You can also apply to be a barn chore shift leader responsible for leading our barn chore teams through a morning or evening feeding (previous experience required).
-
Fundraising - Year round our fundraising team works on exciting projects raising tens of thousands of dollars for the horses. They participate in any number of tasks including soliciting donations, decorating for events, and running event booths.
-
Office / Administrative Work - At CHR Monday through Friday or from home, office volunteers assist with critical administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, mailings, cleaning, and answering phones and emails.
-
Facility Maintenance - Facility maintenance volunteers help with gardening, fence and building maintenance, harrowing of our pastures, and more. Volunteers with a mechanical background help maintain our “work horses” such as our pick-up trucks, tractor, golf carts and horse trailers.
-
Media / Outreach Projects - Professionals in video production, graphic design, photography, public relations and web design donate their services to help spread the word, raise funds, and find horses forever homes.
We accept volunteers of all experience levels. Barn volunteers must be in excellent physical condition. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Children between the ages of 14 and 18 are required to volunteer with a parent or guardian. There is an exception granted for youth groups. School classes, 4-H clubs, Girl and Boy Scout Troops, etc. may apply to volunteer for a day project. Each group is required to have one adult supervisor per three youth.
Can my company, organization or club volunteer together?
Yes, please contact our office by email or phone 720-494-1414 to discuss a day to come out and help out at the farm. Group projects include gardening, fence and building maintenance, clean-up, and building of horse pens and pastures.
Note: Although volunteers can gain experience working around horses, our Volunteer Program is not designed as a teaching/learning opportunity for riding lessons, horsemanship training, groundwork, medical care, husbandry, etc. If you are interested in horse education, CHR regularly offers classes and clinics for both the general public and volunteers.
