Green Horses

Unstarted horses have not been trained to accept a saddle, bridle, or rider. They have had groundwork training, and that degree of training varies from horse to horse. Newly started horses have been trained to accept a saddle, bridle, and rider; however, they need additional time with a trainer to become confident, reliable riding horses. (Young horses at CHR are not started under saddle until they are at least 3 years old).

Bristol

  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: None
  • FEE: $500

After a criminal investigation of starvation and neglect, 810 horses were impounded from the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs & Burros in Lantry, SD late last year. Thanks to our supporters we were able to rescue a band of four including young Bristol. Hundreds of the remaining Mustangs are now under the care of Fleet of Angels, a rescue network in Colorado seeking to re-home them.

Bay in color, volunteers and staff named them after the bodies of water that serve as gateways toward a new direction. CBS 4 recently visited CHR and aired their story. For now, they are receiving plenty to eat and we are allowing them time to settle in to their new surroundings. Our professional trainer will soon begin to provide them with an education. Once they are halter trained, our vet will do a more thorough health evaluation and they will receive farrier care.

She adapted to her new herd with seamless ease, but as weeks turned into months and month into years Dreamer still finds herself waiting for a special person to call her family. Smart, willing, and full of life, Dreamer will make a fabulous addition to any herd with her sweet and sensitive personality. This painted wonder has already gone through an introductory training, having been saddled and ridden. Currently in foster care to continue her education, Dreamer’s future under saddle is a bright one. If you are looking for an amazing project horse more than capable of learning to be a fabulous riding partner, or just a wonderful companion, Dreamer might just be the perfect fit!

  • BREED: Arabian
  • GENDER: Gelding
  • HEIGHT: 14.1 hh
  • HANDLER EXPERIENCE: Trainer
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: Not performance level (age)

Fyre is a smart, thoughtful, and personable gelding who is learning to reconnect with people. After having roamed a mountain range completely alone for over 12 years, he is now learning the subtle skills of equine herd communication. Making friends both horse and human alike are at the top of this handsome boy’s list.

Fyre is a smart, athletic, one-of-a-kind guy who has more try in one hoof than most horses achieve over a lifetime. Even though he is entering the training game a little late in life, Fyre still has the potential to be an excellent companion. He handles each new situation in his own way and has overcome obstacles most horses wouldn’t have to think twice about. Anyone will be lucky to have this guy as a permanent addition to their herd, either as a companion or training project.

While she is here, Havana will continue in her training to hopefully be a wonderful trail or arena horse. Sound, smart, and sane are all qualities she possess. After a criminal investigation of starvation and neglect, 810 horses were impounded from the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs & Burros in Lantry, SD last month. Thanks to our supporters we were able to rescue a band of four including young Jackson. Bay in color, volunteers and staff named them after the bodies of water that serve as gateways toward a new direction. CBS 4 recently visited CHR and aired their story. Jackson was quickly weaned from his mother, Monterey, and he has forged an unlikely friendship with our Belgian cross gelding, Sven. Jackson has been gelded, and he has now been in groundwork training for several months. Still hard to catch, this smart youngster is quickly learning what a positive and productive relationship with people can bring. He will require continued training in his new home, and will come along very quickly with consistent handling.

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Unstarted yearling, needs continued groundwork training

Jourrnee

  • AGE: 18
  • BREED: Arabian
  • GENDER: Mare
  • HEIGHT: 15 hh
  • HANDLER EXPERIENCE: Trainer
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: None
  • FEE: $900

*Currently in foster care* Big and beautiful are just a few ways you might describe this stunning grey mare! Behind that gorgeous and almost delicate exterior beats the heart of a true champion. As an off-the-track Arabian, Jourrnee had a bit of a different upbringing than most Arabians we see today. After her racing career, this bold beauty spent the majority of her time simply grazing out at pasture. Today she is handled daily to better improve her skills on the ground, and to give her a better experience/reintroduction to the saddle. Strong-willed, intelligent, and fast: that’s the mare you see today. Jourrnee is still very green under saddle and will require a trainer at this time to keep her moving forward in her re-education. This is not a horse for beginners. However, her intelligent and quick-learning nature allow this girl to make leaps and bounds in her daily training. It won’t be long before she is conquering the trails!

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Easy keeper; recommended maximum weight load (rider plus tack) = 195 lbs

Montego

  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: Not old enough yet
  • FEE: $500

After a criminal investigation of starvation and neglect, 810 horses were impounded from the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs & Burros in Lantry, SD last month. Thanks to our supporters we were able to rescue a band of four. Alhtough we were not sure for certain, it turns out there was a 5th unborn baby in tow, nearly ready to say hello to the world. Montego was born at CHR in May of 2017. Recently weaned from mom, Montego is currently learning social skills with other CHR horses. As mom is considered a feral Mustang, this youngster is essentially unhandled thus far. He requires halter and groundwork training at this point, and will thrive with an experienced trainer to teach him.

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Unstarted, needs groundwork training

Monterey

  • AGE: ~11
  • BREED: Mustang
  • GENDER: Mare
  • HEIGHT: TBD
  • HANDLER EXPERIENCE: Trainer
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: None
  • FEE: $350

After a criminal investigation of starvation and neglect, 810 horses were impounded from the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs & Burros in Lantry, SD last month. Thanks to our supporters we were able to rescue a band of four including momma Monterey. Pregnant upon arrival with a colt already at her side, Jackson was quickly weaned from mom to begin his new life journey at CHR. Monterey gave birth to her new baby colt, Montego (pictured), in May of this year. Montego has been weaned, and both horses are ready for training.

Bay in color, volunteers and staff named all five horses after the bodies of water that serve as gateways toward a new direction.

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Feral Mustang, needs halter training

River

  • AGE: ~13
  • BREED: Paint
  • GENDER: Gelding
  • HEIGHT: TBD
  • HANDLER EXPERIENCE: Trainer
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: None
  • FEE: $900

Purchased at auction through our Field Rescue Program, River appears to be a horse who was injured, treated, and then put out to pasture with little continued handling. He has a damaged left eye and is blind on that side, but he copes very well with this condition. He is currently learning how to be with and around people as a partially blind horse, and although uncertain at times he shows immense amounts of try. Curious and amendable to basic handling (halters, feet, trailer loading), he will require continued training and has yet to be ridden at CHR. With gorgeous looks despite the eye and a solid confirmation, this sensitive horse’s adoption fee may increase as his training continues.

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Recommended maximum weight load (rider plus tack) = 300 lbs

Sarge

  • AGE: ~31
  • BREED: Morgan
  • GENDER: Gelding
  • HEIGHT: 15 hh
  • HANDLER EXPERIENCE: Intermediate
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: Not performance level (age)
  • FEE: $350

This handsome boy is the very definition of what it feels like to be alive! Don’t let his age fool you, this incredible horse has fearlessly conquered a life of heartache and second chances. Whereas his origins are still a mystery, it is clear to us that Sarge spent much of his time alone. He adapted to this isolation better than most, and came out the other end a strong and forgiving individual. Sarge’s journey to CHR was a lucky one, as he was seized by Animal Control from a home where he was not fed nor given the care he required. Transferred to CHR from another rescue after his rehabilitation, Sarge had been on the list for euthanasia due to his age and care requirements. As each rescue has its own mission and CHR prioritizes quality of life when making those sorts of decisions, we were happy to give his vibrant senior Morgan a safe place to live.

Today, Sarge has fully adapted to his new life at the rescue. A never-ending busy body in the pasture, we decided that this senior still needs a job to do under saddle! With his age Sarge is a light ride horse, and we are still learning about him under saddle. He enjoys long grooming sessions and walks across the property as he waits for the day that someone will see him for the beautiful and forever young soul he truly is.

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Diagnosed with Equine Cushings Syndrome, requires daily medication; has a severe wave mouth, harder keeper

Sven

  • AGE: ~11
  • BREED: Belgian Cross
  • GENDER: Gelding
  • HEIGHT: TBD
  • HANDLER EXPERIENCE: Trainer
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: None
  • FEE: $1600

This big friendly giant came to us through our Field Rescue program. This adorable horse had been sent to auction, where he would likely have ended up at a feed lot and ultimately sent to slaughter if CHR hadn’t intervened. While the big man is still quite afraid of people, he is making some serious progress in his mental rehabilitation. The good news is he is very sound of body. Right now, he requires an advanced-level handler or trainer who understands reactive horses with fear issues.

The longer Sven is under the care of CHR, the more training he will receive. We feel the sky is the limit for this wonderful gelding and only time will tell how far he can go!

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Easy keeper; this is a reactive horse that needs continued training
