CHR’s rideable horse gallery includes horses that are anywhere from light ride only (low intensity, once or twice weekly), to sound at a performance level. Some horses have health conditions that limit their riding/exercise ability, and they may require a special medication, lifestyle, or veterinary care.

Andromeda

  • AGE: ~16
  • BREED: Appaloosa
  • GENDER: Mare
  • HEIGHT: TBD
  • RIDER EXPERIENCE: Intermediate
  • FEE: $1500

At first glance, this is a horse that has the power to captivate your deepest desires. With a hair coat as hypnotizing as a kaleidoscope, its hard not to find yourself entranced as Andromeda prances across your inner hopes and dreams. Sound, rideable, and still quite young, it’s a wonder how a horse like her could end up at the doorstep of a rescue. With her high spirit and love of adventure, Andromeda likely came from someplace to the north (the Dakotas perhaps), where she was treated most unkindly. With marks along her side suggesting old spurring scars, her initial fear of humans was justified. This apprehension coupled with human misunderstanding likely led her down the path of livestock auctions. She then found herself in the killer buyers lot.

Thankfully, forces in the universe decided to give her one last chance. CHR took action and saved Andromeda from her otherwise gloomy fate. Upon arrival she was wary, uninterested, shy, and had a look about her that said “I’m lost”. Time began to heal her emotional wounds, and through careful evaluation a very sound, steady, and willing riding/trail partner was revealed. Andromeda embraces adventure and the unknown, and she simply needs a guiding force to help teach her that people aren’t as bad as her past has proven. Still learning to trust, Andromeda requires a gentle hand with firm guidance. The transition into her new role as a beloved family member and riding partner strengthens by the day, as she proves her versatility in almost any discipline. From jumping, to trail riding, to simply loving a good grooming, this mare is a treasure like no other.

Thankfully, his condition is one that just requires a careful eye. He is not on any medication and is perfectly pasture sound. This adorable Paint is as easy as they come. • RIDER EXPERIENCE: Strong Intermediate
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: Not performance level
  • FEE: $1000

Hanna is an amazing 10-year-old Registered Quarter Horse mare who not only has looks, but brains as well. Surrendered by a loving owner in crisis, this gorgeous red head continues to prove her versatility and willingness as a riding horse. She is a very smart and willing mare with a solid training foundation. She is simply looking for someone to unlock her potential. Diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation (an inconsistently irregular heartbeat), Hanna is not suitable as a performance-level riding horse. After working closely with Colorado State University’s veterinary hospital, it has been determined that Hanna is capable of lower-intensity exercise. Trail and arena riding that does not include steep slopes or maintained high speeds will be best for her. Hanna neck reins, direct reins, and has been ridden on CHR’s property both with other horses and alone. Steady as can be, she is an absolute joy to spend time with. This sensitive horse will give you her all once you have earned her trust!

  • BREED: Paso Fino

  • HEIGHT: 14.1 hh
  • RIDER EXPERIENCE: Trainer
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: Not performance level
  • FEE: $800

Only a day away from ending up at a local feedlot, Piper was saved from this unfortunate situation. Sweet, kind, and willing are a few words to describe this amazingly beautiful little horse. At just 14.1hh, she is a small powerhouse of try. Gaited and smooth with no signs of lameness, Piper is the hot-blooded, go-go mare of your dreams. Since she has been with us Piper has proven to be a sweet and sensitive individual who loves to explore new places. She rides around the property like a steam engine, bareback and in just a rope halter. She has yet to be ridden with a bit, and with her small back and high withers we are restricted to bareback until a properly-fitted saddle can be found. She will, however, stand to be saddled and seems to not be bothered by a breast collar or back cinch. Piper is a confident mare when it comes to tolerating her surroundings, and she requires a calm, easy-going, confident rider who won’t pressure her into performing her gait. She is sensitive to her rider and will need a calm individual who likes a horse with go. Stay tuned as we uncover more about this amazing little mare that found her second chance at life!

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Easy keeper; recommended maximum weight load (rider plus tack) = 150 pounds

Rain

  • AGE: ~11
  • BREED: Paint
  • GENDER: Gelding
  • HEIGHT: 14.2 hh
  • RIDER EXPERIENCE: Advanced
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: None
  • FEE: $700

Rain is an amazing pony who will make a phenomenal family horse. Not to mention a splash of color out in your pasture! Sweet and sensible describe this plucky little guy as he more or less takes the world in stride. At 14.2 hands high he is shorter in stature, but strong enough for small adults and calm enough for children (with adult supervision). His previous training is a bit of a mystery, and he could use a refresher on subtle cues. That said, this sweet, sensitive gelding might just be the perfect fit for you. He has not yet been tested on the trail but will likely be fine so long as he had a confident and capable rider.

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: recommended maximum weight load (rider plus tack) = TBD

Ransome

  • AGE: 13
  • BREED: Thoroughbred
  • GENDER: Gelding
  • HEIGHT: 16.2 hh
  • RIDER EXPERIENCE: Intermediate
  • RIDING LIMITATIONS: Not Performance Level
  • FEE: $1200

Ransome is a spunky and very sensitive gelding. His lengthy racing career landed him with bowed tendons in both front legs, but with front shoes he is now moving very well. Ransome has had some training under saddle since his race days, and he is learning to relax and bend his body appropriately. Due to the injuries he sustained in his racing days, he is suitable for flat work, but not jumping or cross country. He will make a great English or Western horse, and really enjoys trail riding. At this point, he requires and advanced/intermediate rider that can help him become the best horse he can be. He is a very willing partner with loads of potential.

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION:Requires front shoes; recommended maximum weight load (rider plus tack) = 300 pounds

Sebastian

  • AGE: 10
  • BREED: Hanoverian
  • GENDER: Gelding
  • HEIGHT: 17 hh
  • RIDER EXPERIENCE: Advanced
  • FEE: $5000

Sebastian is an incredible 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding who had a bit of a rough start at life. This amazing boy was surrendered to the rescue due to a suspected kissing spine injury. Despite being 17 hands high, he is not built for the life of a jumper and can no longer be ridden as a jumping horse. However, he can still be ridden on the flat and will likely excel as a lower-level dressage horse.

The suspect kissing spine has not been confirmed with a diagnosis, and Sebastian has stayed sound both after multiple rides and ground work. Until a problem presents itself, Sebastian will continue his re-education as a dressage horse. He is still only suited to an advanced-level handler, as he has a bit of strong personality. Price is firm unless he proves unsound in any way. Until then, he will make an exceptional riding and low level dressage horse!

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Not suitable as a jumper, flat work only; recommended maximum weight load (rider plus tack) = 325 pounds

Zelda

  • AGE: 19
  • BREED: National Show Horse (Arabian/Saddlebred)
  • GENDER: Mare
  • HEIGHT: TBD
  • RIDER EXPERIENCE: Intermediate
  • FEE: $800

A sweetheart to her very core, Zelda is a kind soul who spent most of her life in the riding arena and out on the trail. Surrendered by a loving owner in the midst of a medical crisis, Zelda now finds herself in need of a loving family to call her own. She bonds well with other horses, and adores human attention. Her kind-hearted nature is easy to see when handling her on the ground. Zelda has a history of mild, chronic Laminitis, so upon arrival our vet examined her to determine her level of soundness moving forward. Although she is rather sound without shoes, radiographs did show minor abnormalities to confirm her chronic diagnosis. A new set of therapeutic shoes have helped make her sound for light riding and work in the arena. Don’t let her age fool you! This beautiful mare is still young at heart. She is best-suited to an intermediate rider who knows how to work with alert horses. Zelda is a soft, sensitive, forward-moving horse who can and will make someone an incredible companion and potential riding partner!

HEALTH/BEHAVIORAL INFORMATION: Easy keeper; mild, chronic Laminitis must be appropriately managed moving forward; recommended maximum weight load (rider plus tack) = 190 pounds
